Former Celtic and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Victor Wanyama has completed a surprise return to Scottish football, signing a short-term deal with Dunfermline Athletic. The 33-year-old has reunited with his former Celtic boss Neil Lennon, who recently took charge of the struggling Scottish Championship side.
A Reunion 12 Years in the Making
Wanyama’s move to Dunfermline comes over a decade after he last played under Lennon at Celtic, where he made a name for himself between 2011 and 2013. During his time in Glasgow, Wanyama became a fan favorite, helping Celtic secure back-to-back Scottish Premiership titles. His most memorable moment came in the 2012 Champions League when he scored a famous header in Celtic’s 2-1 victory over Barcelona at Parkhead.

His dominant performances in midfield saw him earn a £12.5 million transfer to Southampton in 2013, making him the first Kenyan player to play in the English Premier League.
Premier League Success and a Move to MLS
After three impressive seasons at Southampton, Wanyama moved to Tottenham Hotspur in 2016 for £11 million. He played a crucial role in the Spurs’ midfield, especially during their 2016-17 campaign, when they finished second in the league. Wanyama also featured in Tottenham’s historic run to the 2019 UEFA Champions League final, although injuries began to limit his appearances.

In 2020, he left England for Major League Soccer, joining CF Montreal in Canada. Wanyama spent four seasons in the MLS, serving as the club’s captain and helping them win the 2021 Canadian Championship before leaving earlier this year.
A Fresh Challenge at Dunfermline
Now, back in Scotland, Wanyama’s move to Dunfermline Athletic is seen as a major coup for the club, who currently sit ninth in the Scottish Championship, battling to avoid relegation. His experience, leadership, and physicality in midfield could prove invaluable in their fight for survival.
Manager Neil Lennon, who took charge at East End Park last week, has wasted no time in strengthening his squad. Wanyama becomes his first signing, with the midfielder agreeing to a short-term contract until the end of the season, subject to international clearance.

“He’s a top professional, and I know exactly what he can bring to this team,” Lennon said. “Victor has played at the highest level, and his experience will be a huge boost for us in these final games.”
Victor Wanyama’s Potential Debut Against Scott Brown’s Ayr United
If international clearance is granted in time, Wanyama could make his Dunfermline debut this Saturday against Ayr United, a match that would see him face off against his former Celtic teammate Scott Brown, who is now Ayr’s manager.
Scottish football fans will be eager to see how Wanyama fares in his return, and Dunfermline supporters will be hoping his presence can spark a revival in their campaign. Regardless of how the season unfolds, his return marks a nostalgic and exciting moment for Scottish football.
